Tour Victorian Huddersfield

Huddersfield Local Studies Library commissioned us to produce a CD of archival resources, for use in primary schools. The storyboard was produced by a teacher, and the text and images were uploaded by library staff. The CD is produced by using a web-based content management system to enter data, edit it, and then display it. This is an ideal environment for collaborative working. Once the materials are complete they are transferred to CD, producing multimedia that is viewable using any standard web browser. This means that there is no need to install extra software, and the CD meets web-type accessibility standards.

The title of the CD is 'Through a child's eye' so it starts with the image of an eye, and over the eye are a number of themes that are explored in the CD.

Each theme is introduced by children, first by the Victorian children and then with a matching response from modern children.

At the end of most of the themes are some simple interactive activities using Javascript. In this example, memory tiles are used to reinforce information picked up in the health theme.

In addition to the thematic approach to resources, it is also possible to explore a Victorian ordnance survey map of the area, and to compare the old version with a 2006 map.
